When is an 800 number not really an 800 number?

That is the question that for three years has bothered me. You must understand I spend an awful lot of time on the phone And I answer it at work, with my business name and my name, I say it a little fast, but I am clear.

every year begining in August and going to past thanksgiving another Company has a Toll free number that is the same number as ours only theirs is not 1-800 it begins 1-866 , we are polite when we answer- but the other folks are in a hurry or need help from the company that begins with the 1-866 number and are not always so happy to find out they must hang up and try dialing the correct number that is not an 800 number.

so it begins for another round of you dialed an 800 number but not the correct number, yours will begin with 866 thank you. Good bye

The wrong numbers I get are pretty friendly. I think people are sheepish when they call the wrong "Farmers Whatever" insurance company. Or the wrong Mutual company. It's usually giggle-worthy. I hope you can find some giggle-worthiness in the next wrong number. :)
